Let us behave decently, as people who
live in the light of day. No wild parties, drunkenness, sexual
immorality, promiscuity, rivalry, or jealousy! Instead, clothe
yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not obey your flesh and
its desires. ISV
The
flesh can be put for that fallen nature of man which desires to sin and
which is hostile to God. (Roms. 8:7).
Husbands pursuing other wives are seen as being “lustful” and
seeking greater satisfaction for their fallen fleshly nature. What is
monogamy if marriage is just men pursuing the flesh and are all women
mindless objects? Intimacy is a wonderful gift of God, but
sadly many believe the marriage bed is wicked and lustful but God provided it as a mutual expression of love and affection, a very gift from
Him.
To enter into marriage is a joy and blessing to be embraced as a means of comfort, mutual strength and love. To classify any woman who engages in marriage as being weak willed is so poor a remark as to be left to its own self condemnation, though women who belong to plural families will have plenty to say against this heinous accusation.
Another
insinuation against pro-polygamist men is in the throw away line "go
beat your wives", the assumption being that such men are brutal and have
dragged subdued women kicking and screaming into polygamy. Does everyone
believe that only monogamy has equality of intelligence and alone
prevents incest, rape, brutality, murder, and abuse? Polygamy is as much
a gift of God as monogamy.
