He said to them, Because of your hard-heartedness Moses allowed you to put away your wives; but from the beginning it was not so. Mat 19:8
It
is essential we read the verse above because opponents claim that
polygamy was the result of sin and the hardness of men’s hearts.
Matt19:8 speaks of divorce, not polygamy.
How anyone can use this passage to describe polygynists as "hard
hearted" is a matter to be deplored and regretted.
Is it any wonder when such plain contexts are ignored that ignorance abounds within the
Christian community in the matter of polygamous marriage and there are
many teachers who, denying righteousness with deception, should heed
this warning:
Isa 5:20 Woe
to those who call evil good and good evil; who put darkness for light
and light for darkness;
In
Mark 3, the Lord is grieved by the
hardness of men’s hearts who opposed healing on the Sabbath, likewise by
those disciples who did not believe the reports of His resurrection
Mk.16:14. In Romans 2:5 Paul
condemns those who judge others but do the same things themselves, but
polygamists are never rebuked as sinners or hard-hearted servants.
It is rather interesting that God gave David his master's wives and
declared David a "man after His own heart", see 1Sam.1314 and Acts
13:22. If God had two wives in a figure 9Ez.23), and gave David extra
wives then in so doing God does not declare polygyny an act of hard
heartedness. If polygynous David was a man after God's own heart, then
so can many other past, present and future polygynous families.
For about 1500 years the faithless and disobedient in Israel refused to
hear the Word of God and obey it being described as having hearts
uncircumcised (Lev.26:41)
as they were also described by Stephen;
Act 7:51-53
O
stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears! You always resist the
Holy Spirit. As your fathers did, so you do. Which of the prophets did
your fathers not persecute?
Pro polygamists are not faithless or disobedient to the Word of God.
Since the “church” turned from polygamy years after the New Testament
Christians have blindly believed the lie that polygamy is a sin or the result of
hard-hearted men and this falsehood still infects.
Monogamy and polygamy
are not the
results of sin or men’s hard hearts.
